Technology: Past, Present, and Future

Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity
Significant Concept: Technology is always changing which can lead to positive and negative consequences.
Unit Question: What are the consequences of change?
Requirements:
- Create a new page on your wiki. Name your new page "Technology Timeline".
- Copy this page and paste onto your Technology Timeline page.
- You will choose ONE form of technology to research for your project.
- Research chosen technology through the different time periods starting with the
Agricultural Age (up to the 1700), Industrial Age (1700 - 1950), and ending
with the Technology Age (1950 to present).
- Talk about all the different versions of your technology and when they were invented.
- What is next? Think of the possibilities for this technology in the future.
- Discuss the consequences (both positive & negative) that came as a result of your technology

Criterion A - Research and Analyze:1. What technology did you choose to research?
The MP3 Player
2. What prior knowledge did you have on this topic?
I know that it's a more recent technology. And that it's come a long way.
3. What was the first form of this technology? And what year was it created?
If your technology was created after the 1700s, you will need to figure out what was used before your technology was created.
(ex. Telephones replaced telegrams and smoke signals; light bulb replaced candles and oil lamps)
The patent was created in 1989. However, the first mp3 players were sold in Asia in 1998. Before mp3 players, there were walkmans, and before that, there was people making music.

4. List each of the changes that this technology has gone through and what years they were introduced.
  • Before the 1870's, you could only listen to music by going to a concert, or singing yourself.
  • Thomas Edison and the phonogragh in 1877
  • The first flat disc to produce sound, Emil Berliner in 1887
  • The first plastic vinyl disc (aka a record) produced in 1930
  • The Sony Walkman, portable cassette player. 1979
  • The Sony Discman (aka the D-50), portable CD player, 1984
  • First mp3 player in 1998
  • The first Ipod was released in October 2001 ($400)
  • The Ipod second generation was released in July, 2002
  • 3rd generation, April, 2003 (thinner and intro. the touch wheel)
  • 4th generation (July) and the Mini 1st generation (January) in 2004 (5 colors, smaller with an 8 hour battery life, 4GB storage)
  • Ipod touch 1st generation, September, 2007 (full touch screen w/ apps, youtube, email, iTunes etc.)
  • 2010: Touch 4th generation (face time video chat, retna display, hd video recording and a vibrating motor for face time chat alerts), Nano 6th generation, Shuffle 4th generation
  • Ipod 5g ???

5. Where do you think your technology is going in the future? What could be a new form of this technology that might be invented by 2020? (Hint: This is your own opinion and doesn't require research)
This technology in 10 years could be anywhere. The mp3 players will get thinner and thinner with more and more gigabytes. Maybe we'll even reach 50GB of storage by the year 2020. Who knows?

Using the MYP Rubric, grade yourself on Research and Analysis.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Criterion B - Design

1. Brainstorm the information you are going to include in your presentation.

2. Draw a rough draft of your timeline on a piece of paper.
--Make sure that your information is in order by year--

3. Decide which pictures you want to include in the timeline presentation.

Using the MYP Rubric, grade yourself on Design.

Criterion C - Realizing the Solution

Create your Timeline Prezi presentation.

  • -Create a New Prezi

  • Prezi Title - your name (first & last) Technology Timeline
  • Prezi Description: List the technology you researched.

  • You must start your prezi with a BLANK template.

  • Apply the theme of your choice.

  • Use the brainstorm rough draft you completed during the Design step and create your prezi.

  • -- Make sure you can justify any changes made to your design -- Remember: You must have at least 8 events on your timeline

Upload your prezi link to your Wikispace.

Technology Timeline Prezi

Using the MYP Rubric, grade yourself on Realizing the Solution.

Criterion D - Evaluate

List at least 3 positive consequences that have come from your chosen technology.
Music has become much more accessible, more people have more jobs creating this technology, and music is now (more often than not) a better quality.

List at least 3 negative consequences that have come from your chosen technology.
People seem to be more wired to their cell phones and mp3 players more than ever before.
Music has lost its social aspect. More people would just rather listen to a digital version of the song rather that a real live version.
The materials required to make the mp3 player may be hurting the environment.

Answer the Unit Questions - What are the consequences of change?
Change can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
Some people say that change isn't natural, while others will say change is nature. (Name that movie! :])
Change can be scary and a consequence could be fear.
However, change can also be exciting. And a consequence could be excitement, and a "new day" or another chance at something.
It all depends on how you look at it.
